Introduction -> Subtitles Software -> Repair Subtitles

DivXG400

DivXG400 is a free software, that you can download from Official Homepage
After you have downloaded and installed the program you simply open the movie with your favorite media player (I prefer Microsoft Windows Media Player). You will notice a small blue icon in System tray - it means, that the program is working:
DiVXG400 icon in System Tray

If you right-click mouse on this icon once, you will see context menu:
DiVXG400 context menu

If you have some subtitle files for the movie (in another language, for example), you will see it on the top. You can choose between these files by left mouse clicking on the file's name. If you do not want to show subtitles choose "No subtitles".
In the bottom you can see a lot of different complicated items, but you need only one for subtitle adjustments: DivXG400. Click it with left mouse button. The configuration window will open:
DivXG400 - main window

If you wish to configure DivXG400 without running the movie, you can go to Windows Start menu, then to DivXG400 and click on "Configure DivXG400".
I'll explain only basic and useful options of the program, since it has a very good help file.
The first thing is "Cut sides to vertically/horizontally fill at least XX% of screen"
This option is very useful if you are watching a wide-screen movie. You may want to zoom image to fill XX% of your vertically and/or horizontally screen. This option makes sure that at least specified amount of screen is filled with image.
In the bottom of the window you can notice "Show icon in system tray" check box. Check it if you wish to show the icon
Now let's go to the next tab - Subtitles.
DivXG400 - Subtitles

In "Search" textbox you can write default path to subtitles folder. It's useful when you have lots of subtitles on your Hard Disk, and you don't want to copy it every time you watch the movie to the another folder. For example, if your movie is located in D:\Movies, and all your subtitles are in E:\Subtitles, you may wish to add "E:\Subtitles" to the search path. But remember to separate folders by semicolon (;) and don't delete the last Dot (.) symbol from the path. You can also specify the preferred language of the subtitles in the next checkbox.
The next important, may be the most important option is "In use" - it tells you which subtitle file is in use now. You can also choose different file, located in any folder.
If you see that subtitles are shown earlier or later than they should be, you can use Delay option. Here you enter Delay value in milliseconds (1/1000 second). It can be positive for delay (do display subtitles later), or negative to display subtitles earlier.
You may want to choose font and size of text. To do that you should click "Font.." button. You can also choose Position of subtitles in pixels.
And the last tab is OSD - On Screen Display:
DivXG400 - OSD tab

Here you may want to display additional information with the clip, i.e. Remaining and Elapse time, and also World time. Also you can change font and position of this additional information.
It's all you need to know about this program. But please notice, that you may need to restart the movie player in order to see effect of changes you made.

VobSub

VobSub is another piece of software that allows you to show subtitles. It's very similar to DivXG400. You can download it from here. After you have downloaded and installed it, you can simply start the movie, and you will notice a little green arrow in System tray:
Direct VobSub - tray icon

If you have installed VobSub, and don't see this icon - no big deal, read down, and I'll tell you how to fix it. Now you can right click on this icon to see the context menu. It looks quite similar to that one of DivxG400. You can select the subtitle file that you want to use, or whether to show or not subtitles.
In order to run a configuration window you should select "DirectVobSub (auto-loading version)" from context menu. You can also run it through Start menu: Programs->VobSub->DirectVobSub Configure. The main window will open:
VobSub - main window

In the top of the window the path to the file in use is located. You can choose any subtitle file on your computer to use with the movie you have. On the left you can see Language popup list. If you have some subtitles files for the current movie, you can choose them from this list. Here you can also find "Override placement" checkbox. Check it, if you wish to change position of the subtitles on the screen. Below it you can enter values of placement in pixels.
On the right there are options to change the font of the subtitles. Click on the button with the current font name (in this example - "Arial") to change font type, color and size. If you wish to outline the subtitles text, check "Outline" checkbox. If you wish your subtitles drop shadow, check the "Shadow" checkbox.
Let's go to the next tab - General:
VobSub - general

Here you can notice "Loading" popup list in the bottom of the window. The default value is "Load when needed". It means that the small green arrow in the system tray will be shown only when there is a properly named subtitle file in the current directory (file naming was discussed in the previous section of the article). Otherwise the arrow will be hidden. If you wish this arrow to be always shown, please select "Always load" from the Loading popup list.
The next tab is Timing:
VobSub - Timing

Here you can enter Delay value exactly as with DivXG400. It can be either positive or negative exactly as in DivXG400 case.
And the last tab is Paths:
VobSub - Path

Here you can enter paths to subtitles folders, as in DivXG400. Here paths can be absolute and relative too. Please don't delete the first path - Dot (.) in path list.
